How to go to Khasab from Dubai?

If you are a UAE resident, the best way to reach Khasab is by car.

Tips for driving to Khasab:

If your car is under a bank loan, you’ll need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your bank or dealership to cross the border into Oman.
You’ll need Oman car insurance , which can be purchased at the border if you don’t already have one.
You cannot take a car that is not registered in your name unless you have an RTA permit .

The drive from Dubai to Khasab takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes , plus an additional 30–60 minutes for the border crossing and a fuel or snack stop. Expect a total journey of 3 to 3.5 hours.

If you are a tourist or don’t have a car, the next best option is to join an organized tour , where comfortable transportation is arranged from Dubai to Khasab and back - completely hassle-free!

What to do in Khasab?

Given the long drive, we highly recommend spending 2 days in Khasab instead of the typical 1-day trips offered by mass tour operators.

In two days, you can:

Watch dolphins playing alongside your dhow in the afternoon (avoiding the crowds of morning cruises).
Enjoy a magical sunset, swimming, snorkeling , and kayaking in secluded spots.
Have a freshly grilled BBQ dinner on the dhow, listen to music, and play games with fellow travelers.

On the second day, you’ll wake up for a sunrise hike , enjoy breakfast on the dhow , go traditional fishing, swim, snorkel , and kayak again. You’ll then have a buffet lunch near Seebi Island before returning to the port.

Where is Khasab?

Khasab is located in Musandam, Oman, yet it’s closer to Dubai than Muscat (Oman’s capital).

This is because Khasab lies in an Omani exclave, separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE. You can only reach it by driving through the UAE .

While it takes just 2h 58 minutes from Dubai , the journey from Muscat takes around 7 hours - which is why most visitors to Khasab are UAE residents or tourists visiting the UAE.

Do you need a visa to visit Khasab?

Most nationalities (excluding certain African nationalities, Pakistani, and a few others) holding a UAE work visa valid for over 3 months and a passport valid for at least 6 months can enter Oman visa-free or get a visa on arrival.

If you hold a dependent visa and your dependent meets the same criteria, you can also enter visa-free or get a visa on arrival, provided your dependent travels with you.

Is Socotra safe?

Socotra Island is very safe.

The island has always been difficult to reach, especially in the past years where it has been isolated from the rest of the world due to the Yemeni civil war. However, Socotra has never been affected by the dynamics of the mainland.

Generally, there is very little crime in Socotra, and the local people are incredibly friendly.

The most dangerous part of traveling to Socotra is tripping over your own feet while admiring the views during a hike.

Where is Socotra island located?

Socotra lies in the Indian Ocean between the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa , located around 240 km east of Cape Guardafui (Somalia) and 380 km south of Ras Fartak (Al Mahrah, Yemen).

Together with its neighboring islands - Abd Al-Kuri, Samha, and Darsa - Socotra forms the Socotra Archipelago , one of the most botanically diverse island groups in the world.

It’s one of the most isolated landforms on E arth of continental origin, meaning it’s non-volcanic but a fragment of the ancient southern supercontinent of Gondwana.

How to get to Socotra?

Since the reopening of the commercial air route to Socotra, the Jeddah –Socotra connection has become 100% reliable, allowing tourism on the island once again.

Today, you can reach Socotra with a weekly non-stop flight from Jeddah , scheduled every T uesday .

It does not offer online booking yet. This means that in order to secure a seat on this in-demand flight, you’ll need to book through a licensed local operator such as Arabian Wanderers , who will handle your flight arrangements.

⚠️ Flights to Socotra get fully booked several months in advance , especially during the peak season between November and April. We strongly recommend booking your tour at least 5–6 months ahead to guarantee your flight seats.

Do you need a visa to visit Socotra?

Yes. All tourists require a Yemeni visa to visit Socotra Island. The process is simple and handled entirely by Arabian Wanderers .

All we need is a digital copy of your passport’s main page , and within a few days your visa will be ready.

You’ll receive a digital copy by email, which you’ll present at the Jeddah check-in counter before your flight. The original visa will be handed to you upon arrival at Socotra airport.

When is the best time to visit?

Tours operate from October to April , each period offering a distinct natural charm:

October – November: Lush green landscapes, seasonal waterfalls, and occasional whale shark sightings.
December – February : Cooler weather, the beginning of Bottle Tree blooming, lush scenery, and possible whale shark encounters.
March – April: Warm weather, calm seas ideal for snorkeling, and peak Bottle Tree blooming season.

May to September is the monsoon sea son - with high winds and rough seas - and tours do not operate during this time.

Can I bring my drone?

Yes, you can bring your drone to Socotra — just let us know in advance.

Arabian Wanderers will handle your drone permit request , and you’ll simply pay a $100 fee upon arrival at the airport.

You are free to fly your drone across the island, provided you follow basic safety rules regarding distance from people, towns, and wildlife.

By Bus and Taxi
You can take a bus from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah and then hire a taxi to take you up to Jebel Jais. While feasible, this option is longer and more tiring.

Can you camp in Jebel Jais?

Yes, camping is allowed along the road that winds up Jebel Jais. There are designated public camp sites that are commonly used for overnight camping.

You can search “Jebel Jais viewpoint” on Google Maps - you’ll find eight viewpoints labeled from Viewpoint 1 to Viewpoint 8. The higher the number, the higher the elevation (and the cooler the temperature).

However, be aware of the downsides of public camping spots:

It can get very crowded and noisy, especially on weekends

Campsites are located right by the road, so you’ll hear traffic throughout the night

Public toilets are often not well-maintained

What’s the weather-like in Jebel Jais?

Jebel Jais ranges in elevation from 306 meters at the base to 1,934 meters at the summit - the highest point in the UAE. The temperature typically drops by about 6.5°C for every 1,000 meters of elevation gain.

At 1,300 meters (highest point accessible by public road), temperatures are around 8.5°C cooler than sea level (like Dubai or RAK city).
At 1484 by Puro - the highest restaurant in the UAE - the drop is around 9.5°C.
At Camp 1770, the highest private camp in the UAE where Arabian Wanderers runs both group and private trips , temperatures are about 11.5°C lower.
At the summit (1,934 meters), the difference can be up to 12.5°C.

Winter:
In the colder months, temperatures can dip below 0°C, and snow has even been recorded at the summit. Bring heavy jackets, gloves, and warm layers if you're camping or hiking during this time.

Summer:
Even during the hottest months of the year, Jebel Jais stays cool - with average nighttime temperatures around 22°C in August. Humidity levels are also much lower at high elevation, making the conditions ideal for outdoor stays. That’s why a private camping experience at the top is a must-do in summer - just bring a light jacket for the evening chill.

What to do in Jebel Jais?

Jebel Jais offers a variety of activities for all types of visitors. One of the most iconic experiences is the Jebel Jais Flight zipline, one of the longest ziplines in the world, offering a thrilling ride across dramatic mountain landscapes. We recently went on a 5-day road trip across Oman, exploring hidden wadis, turtle reserves, untouched beaches, and the stunning desert landscapes the country has to offer. And the very first stop on our adventure? The beautiful Wadi Hoqain .

��️ Getting There

After reaching Muscat city on Day 1 , we headed straight to Wadi Hoqain, which is located just about 1 hour away . The drive was smooth with wide roads and almost no traffic. The forecasted temperature for the day was a scorching 45°C , and yes — we still went!

☀️ First Impressions

We reached Wadi Hoqain around 2 PM , right during peak heat. There are two paths you can choose from — one that involves a longer hike through the rocky terrain, and another shorter trail that takes you directly above the wadi.

We came prepared: life jackets, waterproof phone cases , and a ton of sunscreen — all must-haves if you’re visiting during the warmer months.

�� The Wadi Experience

After walking down about 50 steps, we caught our first glimpse — and wow, it was surreal. The wadi looked like a coastal blue dream. The water was light turquoise and inviting. To reach the pools, we had to carefully cross a few wet rocks, so definitely wear water shoes — it’s easy to slip.

As soon as we entered the water, we were greeted by tiny fish that offer a free foot spa and slightly bigger ones that playfully headbutt your feet. Don’t worry — they’re completely harmless!

The first part of the wadi involves a mix of walking over rocks and dipping through water . After about 750

meters , you reach a point where it’s only deep water ahead. At this stage, life jackets are strongly recommended — you’ll thank yourself later as you float through serene pools surrounded by palm trees and rocky cliffs.

The full stretch of the wadi spans about 6 kilometers , though some parts are tricky due to slippery rocks and require a bit of caution.

�� Why Is Wadi Hoqain So Blue?

The stunning blue color of Wadi Hoqain comes from the natural minerals in the surrounding limestone rocks. As the water flows through these formations, calcium carbonate gives it a unique turquoise hue. Add to that the clarity of the water and the light-colored wadi bed, and you’ve got yourself an almost tropical shade — especially under the bright Omani sun. It’s pure magic.

�� Best Time to Visit

According to locals, the best time to visit Wadi Hoqain is from April to August . Despite the heat, the water is at its most refreshing, and the sunlight makes the blue pop even more. Try to go earlier in the day if you're visiting in peak summer.

Wadi Hoqain is easily one of the prettiest and most underrated wadis in Oman. Its coastal-blue water, peaceful vibe, and natural beauty make it an incredible experience — especially for those looking to avoid the touristy crowds of more popular spots like Wadi Shab.

After this, we drove towards Socotra’s farthest eastern point where the Arabian Sea collides with the Indian Ocean in a mesmerizing dance of waves. This was the perfect place for observing the sunset and the rhythm of sky's color gradually changing.

Day 2 - Sn orkeling in Dihamri Marine Reserve or Exploring Hoq Cave

We awakened to the sunrise of life and ate breakfast at our campground. Then we could select between two different things to do.

Some of us went in for snorkeling at Dihamri Marine Reserve , one of the prime places of Socotra. The fish were swimming among the corals and at times one or two sea turtles or even a leopard eel appeared. Since there was a dive master on hand to rent gear, even novices could with some confidence dive in the coral-packed underwater paradise.

The others set off on a moderate hike through Hoq Cave . Entering the cave was like a time travel experience as the huge stalactites and limestone formations inside it seemingly not touched by human beings in centuries, creating a kind of otherworldly beauty. Although it was somewhat creepy, it was also so captivating.

After the lunch at Arher Beach, we then headed to the Diksam Plateau in central Socotra, home to the famous forest of Dragon Blood Trees. Along the way, we made a stopover at Wadi Dirhur , which is a verdant canyon where palm trees and

Bottle Trees jut out of the cliffs.

The night was spent in a campsite right under the Dragon Blood Trees: a memorable experience under a sky full of stars.

Day 3 – Qalansiya & Detwah Lagoon

Going out from the mountainous area, we made our way to the village of Qalansiya on the seaside of Socotra, a place where fisher folks live their normal lives. Villagers mended their nets along the beach, and local kids played in the pathways.

Just outside town, Detwah Lagoon welcomed us, where the pure white sand and the shallow turquoise water color envelope the clean beach. It's a protected natural refuge for stingrays, puffer fish and many other mystically beautiful submarine creatures. I walked gently along the sandbanks and I couldn't believe how virgin the place was.

Inside a secret coastal cave , we had our lunch while our guide gave us more information on the different ecosystems of the lagoon. By the time the sun was setting, we climbed a small hill to get a bird’s-eye view of the lagoon, as the sky transformed into a blend of multiple colors.

Day 4 – Shoab Beach & Hadiboh

We woke up in the morning with a boat ride that took us to Shoab Beach , a secret paradise that is exclusively reachable by the sea. On the way, groups of dolphins appeared, riding the waves beside us and making the journey even more magical.

Shoab Beach was incredibly splendid—soft white sands, crystalline clear waters and not a single building in sight. We spent several hours swimming, sunbathing and simply enjoying the quiet. It is the place you should be if you desire a location that truly seems like the edge of the world.

Late in the afternoon, we moved back to Hadiboh , the capital of Socotra. Though it is a small town with few attractions, it was exciting to go to the local fish market, look around shops and grab a fresh fruit juice before heading to our final destination: Delisha Beach . Watching the sunset here on our last evening in Socotra was the perfect way to end the trip.

Day 5 - Departure

Before returning to the airport, I wanted to make the most of my time by taking a walk on the beach while the waves there were still breaking.
