Where is Salalah?

June 11, 2026

Salalah is located in southern Oman and serves as the capital of the Dhofar Governorate. Positioned along the Arabian Sea coastline, it sits near the border with Yemen and is approximately 1,000 kilometers south of Muscat, Oman's capital city.

For many residents of the UAE, Salalah is surprisingly easy to reach. Direct flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi typically take less than two hours, making it one of the most accessible international destinations in the region.

Salalah's Strategic Location

What makes Salalah's location unique is its position on the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Unlike most destinations in the Gulf, which experience extremely hot and dry summers, Salalah benefits from seasonal winds and moisture coming from the Indian Ocean.

This geographical advantage creates the famous Khareef season, a yearly monsoon that transforms the surrounding mountains and valleys into lush green landscapes.

How Far is Salalah from Major Cities?

Here are some approximate distances to help put Salalah's location into perspective:

City Distance to Salalah
Muscat ~1,021 km
Dubai ~1,232 km
Abu Dhabi ~1,244 km
Doha ~1,726 km
Riyadh ~2,000 km

While the drive from Muscat or Dubai or Abu Dhabi takes around 10 to 12 hours, direct flights from the UAE (only 2 hours long) make Salalah a convenient getaway for travelers seeking cooler weather and natural scenery.

One of the reasons Salalah has become such a popular escape from the UAE is how easy it is to reach. With multiple direct flights operating daily during the Khareef season, you can leave the UAE and find yourself surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and fog within just a couple of hours. That being said, there is one thing many travelers underestimate: flight prices rise very aggressively closer to departure dates. During peak Khareef season, flights can easily become 2x more expensive if booked late. If you already know your preferred travel dates, we would strongly recommend booking your flights as early as possible. Note: This blog has been built around the idea of spending 3 full days in Salalah , as we believe this is the ideal amount of time to properly experience the destination based on our weekly 3 day Salalah adventure trips.
